Our students should feel safe while in the classroom. The increase in bullying and mental health-related issues requires us to take a new approach to keeping our children safe. I will work to ensure these approaches are used to keep our children safe. Safety is a top priority.

Technical Infrastructure

Technical resources must be at the fingertips of all students as we look to close the access gap between urban and rural students. During my administration, I will work with the legislature, executive branch, and the business community to ensure that South Carolina is the leader in technology and innovation.

Education begins at the roots, and I believe standards should be reviewed and approved locally. We must guarantee that teachers and principals are prepared to use strategies that promote collaborative learning and problem-solving. We have a responsibility to ensure that students leave school having learned a variety of practical skills, such as working in groups and showing up on time to work and events.

Empowering Parents

Parents know what is best for their child and no parent or student should be forced to attend a school that is not providing the educational opportunities they want. Every Child deserves every opportunity, every day for the best education possible.  This means parents and students must be empowered with options. It is the right and responsibility of parents to make the best education decisions for their children, whether they home-school their children or send them to private or parochial schools of their choice.  We should help empower these parents so they are able to make those choices best for their children.

Career Education

Our state is in a critical position. Governor Haley has worked hard to bring jobs to our state, but many of these companies cannot find properly trained people to fill those jobs. I have helped create county career centers and will continue to do so. These career centers provide the necessary education to prepare students for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

Changing the System

We’ve reached a critical point in South Carolina for K-12 education. The current system was designed for an agrarian and textile society, and while our state is moving forward, our education system continues to lag behind. We must commit to making this system more personalized and up-to-date with our changing economy and society. By listening to parents, students, the business community, and educators, we will be successful in bringing quality education to our students.

Quality Teachers

Finding and retaining quality teachers and principals is a key part of improving education in this state. We must provide additional support in instruction and literacy to our education community. I will work to train and keep quality teachers who have a history of successfully educating our students.
